Purpose

There are two main purposes of this website.

The first is to provide a tool that allows and encourages those individuals involved in businesses or organisations that work in the "ethical sector" to communicate, form groups, participate in networks, publicise events, share information, receive information and generally interact in a more seamless manner than has previously been available.

The second is provide a press release distribution service for businesses and organisations in this sector directly to members of the press.

Origins

The idea behind ethicalbiz initially came from the small Pennine town of Hebden Bridge where some of the local business people involved in what could be loosely termed the "green scene" realised that there were actually quite a large number of like-minded people scattered around the local area and decided in March 2007 to organise a "Chinwag" or networking event build business relationships and make new contacts.

This proved to be very well received (see article) with even the local council's procurement officer turning up as well as the local Membership Officer of The Co-operative Group who suggested to the organisers that they could be able to apply for funding assistance, should they wish to take the idea further.

When the second Chinwag attracted business people from Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Bradford too, the organisers realised there was quite a demand and decided to accept the Co-op's offer and take the concept further.

This grant, along with money, time and technical assistance from Ethical Jobs Ltd, has led to a rolling out of the idea into cyberspace with the creation of this website.
